The Datsun S30, encompassing the 240Z, 260Z, and 280Z, is a masterpiece of automotive industrial design. Its long hood, short deck, and balanced proportions have made it a legend in the enthusiast community for over half a century. But let’s be honest: while the styling is timeless, the factory chassis technology is a relic of a bygone era.

If you’ve ever pushed a vintage Z through a canyon road or tried to put modern power through a factory R180 differential, you’ve felt the limitations. Vague steering, unpredictable “bump steer,” and the constant anxiety of snapping 50-year-old half-shafts are the trade-offs we’ve traditionally made to drive a classic.

At Apex Engineered, you shouldn’t have to choose between classic soul and modern performance. That’s why we developed the Pro Touring Complete Suspension Kit. This isn’t just a collection of parts; it’s a fundamental re-engineering of the S30 platform.

Why “Pro Touring” Matters for the S30

The term “Pro Touring” refers to a classic car that has been upgraded with modern suspension, braking, and drivetrain components to perform like a contemporary sports car. For the S30, this is a tall order. The original MacPherson strut design and steering box setup were revolutionary for their time, but they struggle to cope with the high-grip tires and high-horsepower engines (like LS, 2JZ, or RB swaps) that enthusiasts are using today.

Our Pro Touring Complete Suspension Kit is designed to bridge that 50-year gap. It provides a cohesive, bolt-on foundation that allows you to drive your Z with the same confidence you’d have in a modern 370Z or BMW M-series.

Front-End Revolution: 370Z Spindles and Quick-Ratio Steering

The biggest weakness in the factory S30 front end is the steering feedback. Between the old steering box (on early models) and the spindly factory knuckles, the “connection” to the road is often lost in a haze of mechanical play.

The 370Z Spindle Conversion
We chose to center our front suspension around the Nissan 370Z spindle. Why? Because it’s a robust, modern piece of engineering that opens up a world of possibilities. By utilizing the 370Z spindle, the Pro Touring kit allows for:

  • Modern Hubs: No more hunting for rare, expensive vintage bearings.
  • Big Brake Compatibility: You can easily mount modern performance brake kits, essential for cars producing three or four times the factory horsepower.
  • 5-Lug Versatility: While we offer 4-lug options, the 5-lug conversion allows for a much wider selection of modern, lightweight performance wheels.

Precision Steering Knuckles
To complement the spindles, we include our custom quick-ratio steering knuckles. These are engineered to sharpen the steering response and reduce the number of turns lock-to-lock. More importantly, we’ve corrected the geometry to virtually eliminate bump steer, the annoying phenomenon where your car changes direction on its own when you hit a mid-corner bump. With this kit, the car goes exactly where you point it, every time.

The Rear Subframe: Taming the Torque

The factory S30 rear suspension is a “Chapman Strut” design, which mounts the differential and control arms to a series of stamped steel brackets. This worked fine for the original 150-horsepower L24 engine, but under heavy load, these components flex, leading to “wheel hop” and unpredictable handling.

The Rigid Subframe Design
Our Pro Touring kit replaces the entire rear assembly with a heavy-duty rigid subframe. This unit ties the rear of the chassis together, creating a much more stable platform for the suspension to work from.

The Differential Revolution (8.8 Swap)
One of the most requested features for any high-power Z build is a differential that won’t explode. Our subframe is designed specifically to house the Ford Super 8.8 or the Nissan 370Z differential.

  • The Ford 8.8: Known as the “gold standard” for engine-swapped cars, it offers an endless variety of gear ratios and limited-slip options.
  • The 370Z Diff: A great modern alternative that provides excellent reliability for street and track builds.

By moving the differential mounting points to a dedicated subframe, we’ve also improved the anti-squat geometry, keeping the car level and composed under hard acceleration.

300M Axles: The 1,000 HP Guarantee

A performance suspension is only as good as its ability to put power to the ground. The factory S30 half-shafts and stub axles are notoriously weak points. If you’re building a car with serious torque, snapping an axle isn’t just a possibility; it’s an eventuality.

Included in the Pro Touring kit are our 300M rolled-spline axles. 300M is a high-strength alloy steel used in aerospace and high-end off-road racing. These axles are engineered to handle over 1,000 ft-lb of torque. We’ve effectively removed the “fuse” from your drivetrain, allowing you to launch with confidence at the drag strip or power out of corners on the track without fear.

Fine-Tuning: 32 Clicks of Adjustment

Every driver has a different preference for how a car should feel. Some want a compliant ride for weekend cruises; others want a stiff, “on-rails” feel for time-attack events.

The Pro Touring Complete Suspension Kit includes your choice of Riaction or BC Racing coilovers. These units offer 32 levels of damping adjustment, allowing you to tune the compression and rebound with a simple click.

  • Ride Height: Fully adjustable without affecting spring preload.
  • Camber and Caster: The kit provides a massive range of adjustment, allowing you to dial in the perfect alignment for your tire setup. Whether you need aggressive negative camber for the track or a more neutral setup for tire longevity on the street, the Pro Touring kit makes it possible.

The “Bolt-On” Philosophy

We know that cutting into a classic chassis is a big decision. That’s why we’ve designed the Pro Touring Complete Suspension Kit to be as close to 100% bolt-on as possible.

We utilize the factory mounting points wherever possible, ensuring that the installation is straightforward for an experienced DIYer or a professional shop. We also provide all the necessary hardware, hardened steel spline shafts, heavy-duty U-joints, and tie rods, so you aren’t stuck hunting for miscellaneous nuts and bolts in the middle of your install.

The Result: A Classic Without Compromise

When you install the Pro Touring Complete Suspension Kit, the transformation of the S30 is total. You aren’t just getting “better” suspension; you’re giving your Z a completely new personality.

The car feels lighter on its feet, more responsive to your inputs, and significantly more capable of handling modern power. You can finally enjoy the timeless aesthetic of the 240Z, 260Z, or 280Z with the peace of mind that comes from modern engineering.
