After countless requests and months of development, Apex Engineered is proud to introduce the long-awaited Datsun 510 Steering Rack Conversion Kit. Designed to bring modern steering performance to a beloved classic, this complete kit replaces the factory box steering with a quick-ratio rack-and-pinion setup—all while preserving the integrity of your 510’s original structure.

The original steering box system in the 510 has long been known for its vague feel and slow response. Our new conversion kit is built around the Ford Escort steering rack, chosen for its ideal geometry in the 510 chassis and its ultra-responsive 2.4-turn ratio. The result? Significantly improved steering feel, sharper response, and a more connected driving experience—whether you’re cruising backroads or setting up for competition.

Designed for a Clean, Minimal Install

We know preserving the originality of your 510 is important. That’s why this kit is designed to be as minimally invasive as possible. There’s no need to cut up your engine bay, and most of the original architecture remains untouched. It’s a thoughtful upgrade that respects the car’s heritage while improving its capabilities.

This conversion also supports most common engine swaps, including SR and KA motors, as well as the factory L-series engine. For LHD vehicles with L-series engines, a custom mid-pipe from the header is required. Need a Right-Hand Drive version? No problem—just mention it in your order notes or email us after checkout.

Key Features:

  • Smooth turning and responsive feel
  • Compatible with SR, KA, and L-series engines
  • Quick 2.4-turn ratio
  • Lightweight and durable design
  • Powder-coated finish for long-term protection
  • Optional fitment for RHD vehicles

Vehicle Compatibility:

  • 1968–1973 Nissan 1600 / Datsun 510 / Bluebird
  • Fits all Datsun 510 models from 1968–1973.

Why Convert to Rack and Pinion Steering?

The factory steering box in the Datsun 510 gets the job done—but by today’s standards, it leaves a lot on the table. Vague feedback, slow response, and noticeable play are common complaints among owners still running the original setup. Rack and pinion steering offers a more modern driving experience, with consistent feel and quicker reaction to inputs.

By converting to a rack and pinion system, you’re not just upgrading parts—you’re improving control, precision, and driver confidence. Whether you’re carving back roads or just want a better connection to the car, this upgrade delivers a noticeable improvement in every turn.

Steering Feel: What to Expect After the Swap

One of the biggest changes you’ll notice after installing the rack conversion kit is how the car responds to your hands. The quick 2.4-turn rack provides faster steering input with a more direct connection to the front wheels. Slop is reduced, transitions are tighter, and overall feedback is more predictable.

Importantly, the setup strikes a balance—it’s not overly aggressive for daily driving, but it brings out the best in the 510’s chassis. Whether you’re running vintage tires or modern rubber, the improved feel makes driving more engaging and controlled without sacrificing comfort.
